I realized after looking through these last several pictures from Brooklyn that i haven’t really ever made a series of images of a city before, i really enjoy it. Seems to me like the same basic rules apply to both uninhabited and inhabited areas. At least i just walk around and try to get the pictures that come out of the camera to look like what i see in my head. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, all i know is that film is about $3 a roll and i’m totally fine with that. (and instead of having to make sure i don’t trip and fall into a river (only happened once) i have to worry about not getting run over by a delivery truck (not happened yet).)

I work in downtown San Francisco and live very close to where i work. I’ve been meaning for a long time to spend some time downtown with my camera. I did it a few years ago when i started this project, but i was forcing what ended up being the short lived experiment that i could be happy making digital images. I was generally pleased with the results but not really satisfied with the outcome (if that makes any sense).

Anyway. More cities. On the list (and so close to home even).

One of the things i think is great is the fact that in Brooklyn, a borough of New York City, a city that nearly 9 million people call home, you can walk down the street and come across this old shell of a deserted building with a large leaf-less tree nearby and barely a hint that there are people everywhere all around you. And everywhere really means everywhere around there.

I digress – Americans: enjoy the holiday weekend, everyone else, please come visit New York if you haven’t (and San Francisco for that matter!) and bring your cameras – digital or otherwise, I’d like to do the same in your city one of these days.
